How to use a Korean convenience store

A simple first-timer’s guide to buying, heating and eating food at CU, GS25, 7-Eleven and Emart24.

The basic flow

  • Choose your food and drink.
  • Pay before opening or heating anything.
  • Ask whether the store has a microwave or eating area.
  • Sort waste according to the labels near the bins.

Heating food

Many lunchboxes, rice meals and hot snacks include microwave timing on the package. Remove any sauce packet, oxygen absorber or metal lid when instructed. If you are unsure, show the package to the cashier before heating it.

Useful things to know

  • Eating areas are common but not guaranteed.
  • Hot water is often available for instant noodles.
  • Disposable chopsticks may be near the register or microwave.
  • Stock and exclusive products vary by branch.
